Furnace Replacement Warning Signs

It makes sense to try to repair your heater as many times as possible before replacing it. However, not all furnaces can last forever. If you can diagnose your malfunctioning furnace using these warning signs before it goes out, a technician may be able to replace it.

Age

Most furnaces last 20 to 30 years, but certain types may last much longer if properly maintained. You should check the breakers and shut-off switches, and replace dirty filters with clean ones that allow air to flow freely.  You can determine the age of your heating system based on the information on the label attached directly to the unit and its manufacturer. Several manufacturers have made their manuals available online.

Inefficiency

As an old furnace becomes inefficient, it will continue to run to keep your house at a comfortable temperature. However, they consume more fuel without necessarily providing more heat.  Clogged filters can restrict the flow of air in the heating system, causing it to work overtime. If the condition has worsened, you’ll need to replace the furnace.

Turns Off Repeatedly

Overheating and short cycling may be caused by faulty temperature-monitoring components. Malfunctioning heat exchangers may also cause short cycling. Damaged heat exchangers will emit heat into other furnace components.

Inconsistent Temperature

If the blower fan is damaged, it won’t be strong enough to blow air throughout the house. As a furnace ages, it can become inefficient and won’t distribute heat evenly throughout the house. There may be some areas of the house that are cooler than others, resulting in cold patches. A heat exchanger or pilot light problem could be causing your furnace to not blow any warm air. An HVAC technician will need to investigate to determine if any repairs can be made.

Lots of Repairs

If you are dealing with many heater repairs in the same year, there is a reason so many heater failures occur so close together. If your heater is older, frequent repairs are extremely important. It’s always a good idea to replace an inefficient HVAC heating system with a new, more efficient one.

Do Not Ignore the Warning Signs of a Failing Furnace

If you rely on a reliable heater rather than repair a unit that continually breaks down, you will save time and money. You can get expert help sooner if you learn more about furnaces and possible issues. A professional HVAC technician can help you with any furnace problems you encounter
